Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-07-23 Summary: The Entire Story ... The movie was pretty good but there were some inconsistencies. The book has the details and creates a better 'visual' than the movie. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-08-29 Summary: Good condition. ... When I received this book in the mail, it was packaged neatly and carefully. I really appreciate the way it was handled. It looked almost like new. There was scuffing barely visible where the plastic of the jacket was rubbing against the covers of other books, but it was only visible if you looked hard enough. It is, after all, a first edition. All in all, great shape. I was very pleased with my purchase. :) ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-04 Summary: Perfectly written ... I am a new reader of Thomas Harris. I had seen the movie adaptation of 'The Silence of the Lambs' when it first came out, but had never read any of the books. I just finished Hannibal, and I thought it was excellent. At first I was amazed I was feeling sympathy for such a horrible monster, but as I read, it began to make sense. We are all capable of evil on some level, regardless of how that evil plays out; lying, stealing, murder. What makes this book so powerful is it allows you to live in the mind of each character, ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-28 Summary: Thrilling story ... I am reading Hannibal for the second time and find it just as thrilling as my first encounter with Hannibal Lecter. I am suprised by the negative reviews that this story has received. The plot is exciting, and I enjoyed the book's ending far more than the one the movie left us with. Is Hannibal a monster? It was easy to say yes after Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector). Now that we can step into the mind of Lecter, the question is a little harder to answer. He is a complex and brilliant character. ...more
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Product Description | You remember Hannibal Lecter: gentleman, genius, cannibal. Seven years have passed since Dr. Lecter escaped from custody. And for seven years he's been at large, free to savor the scents, the essences, of an unguarded world. But intruders have entered Dr. Lecter's world, piercing his new identity, sensing the evil that surrounds him. For the multimillionaire Hannibal left maimed, for a corrupt Italian policeman, and for FBI agent Clarice Starling, who once stood before Lecter and who has...more
[2] ... Review | Horror lit's head chef Harris serves up another course in his Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter trilogy, and it's a pièce de résistance for those with strong stomachs. In the first book, Red Dragon (filmed as Manhunter ), Hannibal diabolically helps the FBI track a fascinating serial killer. (Takes one to know one.) In The Silence of the Lambs , he advises fledgling FBI manhunter Clarice Starling, then makes a bloody, brilliant escape. Years later, posing as scholarly Dr. Fell, curator of a grand family's...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-01-30 Summary: Great Book ... I couldn't put the book down. As usual with Grisham, I was left hanging at the end on some things, but that's to be expected with him. Never a fairy-tale ending. The book was delivered within a week of purchase and was in excellent condition. I was very satisfied. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-18 Summary: Painted a minor masterpiece ... I saw that a movie was made of this book and decided to give it a try. Who would have thought that John Grisham, king of the lawyer airport novels, had written such a moving American story. I think this will go down as his best book. This story has great scale and I love the way it was all tied together in the end. ...more
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Product Description | Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long, hot summer of his seventh year, two groups of migrant workers — and two very dangerous men — came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries are flooding Luke’s world. A brutal murder leaves the town seething in gossip and suspicion. A beautiful young woman ignites forbidden passions. A fatherless baby is born ... and someone has begun...more
[2] ... Review | Ever since he published The Firm in 1991, John Grisham has remained the undisputed champ of the legal thriller. With A Painted House , however, he strikes out in a new direction. As the author is quick to note, this novel includes "not a single lawyer, dead or alive," and readers will search in vain for the kind of lowlife machinations that have been his stock-in-trade. Instead, Grisham has delivered a quieter, more contemplative story, set in rural Arkansas in 1952. It's harvest time on the Chandler...more
Henry II
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-12-28 Summary: Henry II: dysfunctional, and effective ... "From the devil they came. To the devil they shall return." Abbé Bernard of Clairvaux (later Saint Bernard) pronounced that uncharitable verdict on the Angevin line. Legend has Bernard voicing his opinion after taking one look at the infant Henry of Anjou, child of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou and his consort, the Empress Matilda. Nothing deterred, the infant Henry grew to inherit Anjou, as its count (1151). Then came his conquests by might or marriage: Normandy, Aquitaine and Poitou, before claiming England as King Henry ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-09-22 Summary: Best Biography I've Ever Read ... This is not only the best biography of Henry II I've ever read, but it is one of the best non-fiction historical books I've ever read, too. The writing is lively, engaging, and often wryly amusing, though that may be in part because of the subject. Mr Warren does not in the least ignore or minimize the flaws of Henry II, but neither can he conceal a deep respect for this magnificent king. Too often, the tragedy of Thomas Becket and Henry II's relationship with the glamorous Eleanor of Aquitaine detract from this great ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-04-06 Summary: Very Informative Reference ... In my book, "Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins", I devote an entire chapter to the astronomical symbols that were depicted on medieval English coinage as signs of divine right to sovereignty. As part of my research, I read numerous books on medieval English history, and I found that Warren's book, "Henry II," was especially useful. Not only were there many items of interest that added to my understanding of the history of his reign, but of all the books about Henry II that I read, Warren's book was ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-28 Summary: Dysfuntional, yes, but effective! ... "From the devil they came. To the devil they shall return." Abbé Bernard of Clairvaux (Saint Bernard) pronounced that verdict on the Angevin line. Legend has Bernard voicing his opinion after taking one look at the infant Henry of Anjou, child of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou and his consort, the Empress Matilda. Nothing deterred, the infant Henry grew to inherit Anjou, as its count (1151). Then came his conquests one way or another: Normandy, Aquitaine, Poitou and finally the crown of England (1154-1189). Henry II and ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-03-07 Summary: An exhaustive survey of Henry FitzEmpress's career presented with an approachable narrative style. ... W. L. Warren's excellent monograph on the first Plantagenet king displays a superb narrative style and an authoritative thoroughness of detail, which nonetheless remains surprisingly approachable for a work of this length and depth. This depth is remarkable: one can open the book to any chapter and read it independently without feeling that one is missing key details. Yet the book manages to steer free of a sense of drudgery or redundancy, even while effecting such an admirable encapsulated quality for its chapters. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Henry II was an enigma to contemporaries, and has excited widely divergent judgments ever since. Dramatic incidents of his reign, such as his quarrel with Archbishop Becket and his troubled relations with his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and his sons, have attracted the attention of historical novelists, playwrights, and filmmakers, but with no unanimity of interpretation. That he was a great king there can be no doubt. Yet his motives and intentions are not easy to divine, and it is Professor...more
