On The Trail Of A Lion: Ahmed Shah Massoud Oil Politics and Terror
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-02-22 Summary: Great Little Book on Massoud and Fake Terror ... The author does an admirable job describing Afghanistan's tortured past, present and future as a pawn of cynical imperialists, most notably the USA. He correctly oppoints out how the Americans supported the Taliban when it was convenient to do so, especially if it meant fattening corporate campaign chests. He also correctly implies that this relationship may still be ongoing, despite the manipulated war on terror which is being used to mask hegemonic capitalism's grand designs for Afghanistan. But the focus of his ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-25 Summary: Excellent Synopsis of Afganistan from Soviet Invasion to post 9/11 ... A quick read catering to those who admire Ahmed Shah Massoud as the "Che" of the Middle East and the dire situations he has faced in his homeland. Although the quantity of the content in regards to direct relations and general philosophy of Massoud is somewhat lacking, Rowan more than makes up for it in his very concise account of the various allied and enemy factions that make up this richly historic but completely fractured country. Quite frankly, there isn't much available of note on Massoud's life in print (there ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | What do we really know about this extraordinary Afghan leader who has been called 'the Afghan Che Guevarra' or 'the lion of Panjshir'? Who really killed Massoud on 9 September 2001, two days prior to the 11 September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center? Was it real the work of Taliban/Al Qaeda operatives as many would like us to believe? We do know that there were two Arabs with stolen Belgian passports, one of whom was killed in the explosion and the other shot while trying to escape....more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-08-31 Summary: What went wrong ... A more appropriate title might be "What we did wrong in Afghanistan." The book is carefully researched and well worth reading for anyone interested in how al Quaeda took control of Afghanistan. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-04-27 Summary: Important Contribution with Some Errors and Omissions ... I cannot second-guess the author's findings based on his extraordinary direct research, but I do question some of what he was told (Madeline Albright, for example, misled this author), and I also have some issues with how the book's findings over-state, under-state, and ignore other credible sources I have reviewed here at Amazon. Up front, seven excellent insights from this book: 1. The U.S. in the 1990's had no idea that Information Operations (IO) was going to be important, and that the dissemination of deadly knowledge ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-05-08 Summary: Failure is not an orphan ... John F. Kennedy famously observed that "Success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan." Roy Gutman demonstrates that JFK had it backwards. Many of us are old enough to remember the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. We're old enough too to remember the Reagan years when plucky bands of raggamuffin fighters, supplied with weapons by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, drove the world's most feared fighting force, the Red Army, out of their homeland and back across the "Friendship Bridge" from whence ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Focusing principally on events and policy missteps in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 1990s, award-winning journalist Roy Gutman weaves a narrative that exposes how and why the U.S. government, the United Nations, and the Western media "missed the story" in the leadup to 9/11. He advances this narrative carefully and persuasively and approaches his subject with an objective, journalistic eye, drawing heavily on his own original research and extensive interviews with key players both in the...more
