It is an AC adapter, not a charger. I need an AC adapter because I plan on using the intervalometer feature to shoot time-lapse photography for up to several months with my PowerShot S1 IS. This will save me possibly hundreds of recharges of batteries and allow me the knowledge that I can let it snap photos for up to 4 days (maximum limit of the camera) without worrying about batteries. (Canon includes a battery charger with its cameras that use custom batteries.) It is an AC adapter that allows you to use your compatible camera without depleting (or even using) a battery.
